Lack of Sleep Strongly Linked to Obesity

It's not very surprising researchers have found a strong link between one's lack of sleep and an increased risk of obesity. What may be a surprise to some of you is how much damage you can do to your body when you cut back on your sleep. The numbers below speak volumes:

  • 4 hours = 73 percent risk
  • 5 hours = 50 percent risk
  • 6 hours = 23 percent risk

This study of some 18,000 Americans found the effect of chronic sleep deprivation on the body's food-seeking circuitry is what specialists suspect may be making the difference in obesity risks. Sleep deprivation lowers leptin, a blood protein that suppresses appetite and affects how the brain senses when the body has had enough food, and raises levels of grehlin, a substance that makes people want to eat.
