Researchers warn of western diet's link to diabetes

Eating red meat and highly processed meats such as hot dogs could increase the risk of diabetes, according to the latest research.

Researchers in the United States have blamed the so-called "western diet" for an increase in the blood disease, and urged people to cut back on sweets, chips and white bread as well as red and processed meats.

They issued their warning after discovering that people who followed the western diet ran a 50 per cent higher risk of developing diabetes over a 14-year period than those who ate minimal amounts of western-type foods. The researchers found that the more red and processed meats people ate, the more their risk of diabetes increased. [Scotsman.com News - Health]
