Aspartame Case History
The following is a case history Dr. Hull's office recently received via email. Case histories such as this make it difficult to say "aspartame isn't the cause" when someone reintroduces it so many times only to have the same symptoms recur.
I say "No" to aspartame usage, but I occasionally drink a diet soda drink containing aspartame. When I was a child, I used the sugar substitute with no problems, and can use it now with no apparent problems. Short term.
I avoid all sugar substitutes because, in the 1973, I was using diet soda pops (1-2 a day). After a couple months, I noticed my blood pressure (bp) was elevated, so much so that I consulted a doctor. We went over everything but could not find anything that was a cause of the high bp. Meantime, I had stopped using diet sodas and my bp slowly returned to normal over a period of a month or so.
Again in 1976, I began using diet soda pop regularly and after a couple of months my blood pressure went way up. I returned to the same doctor. We discussed it and came to the conclusion it was the sugar substitute in the diet soda pop causing the problem. I stopped using diet everything. My bp slowly returned to normal over a period of a couple of months.
Disregarding this, in Dec 1998, my wife was diagnosed with diabetes. In the spring of 1999, to help keep our home "sugar free", I switched to diet sweetened products. Within 6 months my bp was off the charts and I discontinued use about November. By February, with my doctor, my bp was back to 155 / 90, down from 190 / 110, and I began to breathe easier. In early March, I suffered my first stroke, a very mild one which I put down to a "psuedo stroke" similar to one I had suffered in 1987. Again the end of May, my bp having dropped to 135 / 65, I suffered my second stroke, even milder than the first one in March.
I did notice that my "short term memory" for common words, nouns -
names of people, places and things, which I had always had trouble with, was worsening to the point where it was noticeable to not only me but to everyone I knew!
In August I was reading a Reader's Digest article on strokes and realized that both of these supposed "pseudo strokes" were actually "real strokes", and the explanation of my worsening short term memory was revealed.
Hope this adds something positive to your findings.
