The U.S. Surgeon General has called this the sickest generation
ever. This remark referred to the standard American Diet, SAD,
an appropriate acronym. Our food is grown in depleted soil, is
over-refined and then to make it nutritious, it is
fortified. While this may sound comforting to the
average American, what does it actually mean? Most Americans eat
a diet that has little or no nutritional value. We are all busy
and many of us eat fast food, either from drive-in windows or
the supermarket aisles. When we get this fast food home from the
market, we throw it in the microwave. It has been shown that this
method of heating changes the molecular structure of food. In
our society, convenience comes before health.
When your body gets food in a state that does not reflect nature,
it is not sure what to do with it. The result is a body out of
balance. The brain sends the message that the body is starving
and it goes into survival mode: the body holds onto the food.
The result is a nation of overweight people. Nearly 2/3 of us
are over-weight and 30% of us are obese. Severely over-weight
people are having their stomachs stapled as a solution. Besides
the danger of the actual surgery, there are potentially dangerous
side effects.
One out of every eight kids under the age of 12 has Type II Diabetes.
This used to be referred to as Adult Onset Diabetes, that is no
longer true. Fifty years ago the cancer statistic was one out
of a thousand, then in the early 1990s it went to one in nine.
Now, 2.5 people will hear the words, Youve got cancer,
from their doctors. About ninety percent of us will die of PREVENTABLE
degenerative diseases. What are we waiting for?
The March 2003 issue of Newsweek addresses the problem in an
article titled, A Better Way to Eat. They say that
we have grown fatter and sicker since the USDA Food Pyramid came
out a decade ago. According to the article, there is a new Healthy
Eating Pyramid devised by Dr. Walter Willett and his colleagues
at The Harvard Medical School. The bottom half (and it is the
fat half) of this revised pyramid is unrefined plant-based foods.
At the bottom of the pyramid, is unrefined grains and healthy
unsaturated oils such as olive and flax; the second tier is fruits
and vegetables. Next come nuts and legumes, such as beans and
peas. Above this are eggs, fish, seafood and poultry then on top
of that, dairy products. The apex of the pyramid is shared by
red meat and refined carbohydrates. The pyramid does not even
address saturated fats, but the apex is a great place for them.
The closer a food is to its natural state, the easier it is for
our bodies to recognize it. Other things that are crucial for
a healthy body are lots of water (at least a half-ounce a day
for very pound of your body weight), exercise and at least 20
minutes a day of sunlight.
Food First is a 10-day program of eating whole raw foods. This
food product from the Brain Garden offer twenty-four whole raw
foods in a can. You eat the primary product, Pulse, as your main
food. Supplement this with Parched Pulse, a dehydrated vegetable
product that makes a tasty soup, and Finally Fruit, dehydrated
mixed fruit. Brain Garden calls this way of eating Primary
Nutrition because the whole raw foods nourish the body at
a basic level. The brain sends a message to the body that there
is nourishment and the body starts to let go of weight it is holding
on to. These foods do much more than weight control. The body
begins a detoxification process and brings itself into balance.
Most of the people doing the 10-day program are experiencing discernable
results. The company wants to gather these results from over 100,000
and turn them into usable statistics. To accomplish this, Brain
garden is given away $200.00 worth of free food to participants
wanting to take part in the program who to three simple conditions.
Interested people can attend a local Food First Presentations
and leave with their 10-days of food.
People report weight loss, more energy, a better nights
sleep, lower blood sugar levels (including people with diabetes),
lower cholesterol and lower blood pressure to name a few results.
People with chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia and MS are reporting
more energy and less pain. Deborah Davis of Fort Collins endured
chronic pain from fibromyalgia and rheumatoid arthritis brought
on by a serious auto accident over twelve years ago. She has been
on disability as a result of the accident for over twelve years.
Now she is on a work-trial program, which will lead to her coming
off disability permanently. These dramatic results came after
about six months of eating the Brain Garden foods and taking Dynamic
Plus (a combination green food/probiotic) and using the companys
pharmaceutical-grade essential oils. The probiotic contains a
patented ingredient, L Plantarum OM, which has anti-viral, anti-retro-viral
and anti-tumeral capabilities. This product, included in the 10-day
program, has also helped people with reflux and other digestive
problems. It also helps with regularity. For more information
and reports of other dramatic results, e-mail hummingbear@juno.com.
After the 10-day program, it is important to follow a maintenance
program to retain and increase your level of health. Monthly Health
is a Habit potluck dinners will help people work the foods into
their every day lives.
